Linea nigra – A line of skin running from belly button to pubic hairline

You are going to notice many bodily changes during pregnancy.

Some may surprise you, make you embrace yourself, and some may catch you off guard.

Every change is just a part of the pregnancy phase and is undoubtedly normal. One such change is the prominence of linea nigra.

What is linea nigra?

It is a line that appears during pregnancy, which runs from the belly button to the pubic hairline. Sometimes, it runs from the belly button upwards towards the sternum. In general, we all have this line even before pregnancy; it is just that this line becomes prominent during the second trimester of the pregnancy. This is a perfectly normal condition, and eventually, this prominence will fade away after delivery. For some, it may become a permanent mark; however, it is not abnormal and should not be a matter of concern.

What makes linea nigra prominent?

During pregnancy, your body secretes a high level of progesterone and estrogen hormones. These hormones are required to equip the body preparing for the pregnancy and the fetus health. But, these hormones often have their effects. Increased secretion of these hormones will eventually increase the melanin secretion. That is also the reason why your skin turns hyper-pigmented during pregnancy.

How to tackle linea nigra?

You can not prevent the linea nigra from forming. No need to stress or to seek medical intervention for the same, as it is a process of pregnancy that happens due to hormonal actions. However, if the marks persist even after the pregnancy, and in case it bothers you, taking a dermatologists opinion is advisable. Needless to say, any dermatological treatment is not advisable during pregnancy or while you are breastfeeding.

Conclusion:

Linea nigra is a purely normal change that happens during pregnancy. Although these marks fade eventually with time, you may opt for any available dermatological options if you wish to.ร‚
