Isolation entails keeping infected people away from others to avoid the spread of the infection. Quarantine entails separating people and limiting their movements who are suspected of having been exposed to the infection. This is done to check whether they become ill so that they can be isolated to contain the spread of the disease.

When is a person asked to quarantine?

The health department requires a person to be quarantined if he/she is suspected of being exposed to the COVID-19 virus or has been in close contact with someone infected. The quarantine can involve staying at a designated medical facility or staying at home. This helps prevent the infection from spreading even before the individual shows any symptoms or feels ill. There is a specific duration for the quarantine period. If, during this period, the individual shows no sign of any illness, he/she is released.

How to quarantine at home?

It is advisable to quarantine at the comfort of your own home to restrict the infection spread to other family members. The few simple steps to observe quarantine are:

  • Staying home for 14 days
  • Keep a lookout for symptoms such as fever, cough, shortness of breath, etc.
  • Keep away from other people.
  • You should especially keep away from people at a high risk of contracting severe or chronic illnesses.
  • Keeping a minimum distance of 6 feet between yourself and others.
  • Consult your doctor immediately if your health deteriorates or the symptoms worsen.

When is a person asked to isolate?

The health department requires a person to go into isolation if the COVID-19 virus infects them or if the person shows any infection symptoms. People who are not exhibiting any signs of the infection but have tested positive are also required to go into isolation. Those exhibiting mild symptoms are advised to isolate themselves at home, whereas; those showing severe symptoms must be hospitalized for intensive care.

During the isolation period, the individual must stay away from all human contact and any contact with pets.

Steps to observe isolation at home

  • Keep away from all family members and pets
  • Wear a triple layered mask at all times
  • Use a separate bedroom and bathroom.
  • Keep all utensils and things of daily use separate.

At the slightest sign of deteriorating symptoms, immediate consultation with a doctor is mandatory. Your period of isolation would last until your healthcare provider gives the go-ahead for the same.

Quarantine and self-isolation are both in the best interests of the individual and people close to them. It restricts the possibility of the spread of infection. It ensures your family and friends are not exposed to the illness and are safe.
